1. By virtue of the authority vested in me by Title 38, Revised Statutes, and as Commander-in-Chief of the Military and Naval Forces of the State of New Jersey, The State Military Board, The Adjutant General's Department, The Quartermaster General's Department and State Headquarters and Detachment, National Guard, are hereby consolidated to constitute the Department of Defense of New Jersey.
2. The head of the Department of Defense shall be the Chief of Staff.
3. The organization of the Department of Defense will conform, insofar as practicable and permitted by law, to current staff structure of the armed forces of the United States.
4. The duties and responsibilities of The Adjutant General and The Quartermaster General shall be published in orders of the Department of Defense.
5. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for a study of the military and naval organization of this State, including adequate provision fore civilian defense, and will recommend legislation for the improvement and modernization thereof to the Governor, as Commander-in-Chief, prior to January 1, 1948.
6. Detailed instructions necessary to implement this Order will be issued by the Chief of Staff in orders of the Department of Defense.
7. The effective date of this Executive Order shall be August 1, 1947.
